Celebrating Eco-Moms!

In the April issue, “O” Magazine interviewed Daniel Goleman, psychologist and author of the newly published book, ECOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE: HOW KNOWING THE HIDDEN IMPACTS OF WHAT WE BUY CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING.

Among the many interesting points he has to make, one question posed to him was who he felt was going to lead this green revolution.  His answer was not an army of Al Gore’s but an “army of eco-moms”. He continued by saying,  “In most families, it’s the moms who shop, and moms care about the well-being of their families. The real leaders are not the Al Gores; they’re the moms.”

So with that and in honor of Mother’s Day, I am taking this as an opportunity to recognize on a broad scale a few key moms out there making their world a better place for their children and families.  From celebs, to activists, bloggers to the green moms next door,  join me this week  to celebrate these women who not only sustain their families but the environment as well.

Recycle, Repower and Renew. It’s the RRRight thing to do.

This week as I was traveling down my path towards greater environmental awareness, I came across a precocious boy with a big idea.  Mikey has some interesting thoughts about how to renew the auto industry and in the process, help the environment.  mikey-carAs stated in his press release, his idea not only reinvigorates the ailing auto industry, it can also put  people back to work by using what we already have in a very resourceful manner -  all of which can create good green results for both the economy and the environment.

obamaPresident Obama, every member of the Senate and all the Governors have already received a special delivery from Mikey – a limited edition of  his new  book – “I Have an Idea to Save the Auto Industry”. Visit  mikeysidea.com to learn more about it and download a copy.   It’s a quick read and leaves the door open for further discussion on the hows. With colorful illustrations by Michael Andazola, Mikey also speaks several universal truths throughout his book like the one he sent me below.mikey“If you’re happily on your way, it’s easier to be happy when you get where you are going” – Mikey

Also, in a recent interview with Larry King, Bill Ford discussed a similar strategy.  Maybe these two need to get together.  Recycle, Repower, Renew…could be the right this to do.

“The earth is a house that belongs to us all”

the-earth-is-a-houseI came across this wonderful artwork by Cheryl Piperberg while sitting in the waiting room for a recent doctor visit for my six year old.

How true – the earth is a house that belongs to us all.  And our own bricks and mortar house and space in life is just one of many, many rooms.  Generally speaking, I get totally overwhelmed when I think of having to clean our entire house from top to bottom.  But when I divide things up and ask my children to help clean up their own rooms and space, I find that I can breath a little easier.  It doesn’t have to be all up to me.

And in terms of the climate issues, we don’t have to take on a huge environmental and monumental task in order to feel we are doing a worthwhile part to clean up this great big house.  We only need to focus on our own space and do what we can to become more aware and have a positive impact.

Most of us are immigrants to this world of sustainability and environmental awareness whereas our children are and will be natives.  For those like many of our parents born before 1945, increasing recycling efforts may be the task at hand.  My generation – the end of the baby boomers - finds ourselves open and willing to accept and learn new ways for the future of our children.  Gen X and Gen Y I’d like to think are even more in tune and in touch thanks to the efforts of forward thinking eco-boomers.  And for all of those little natives growing up today, they won’t remember when we were still talking about the benefits of recycling, using reusable totes or eco-friendly products.  It will be their way of life.

So as we kick off Earth Day week -  whether you are an  Al Gore or my dad, an Ed Begley, Jr. or regular Joe, a natural mom or mainstream mom, 80 years old or eight…focus on what you, as you are today, can do in your room and space and we’ll all keep this house looking beautiful for generations to come.

Happy Earth Day!

UNC / MSU: Which is the greener of the two?

It’s a big day here in my home state of North Carolina – University of North Carolina vs Michigan State University for the NCAA Championship. Despite the fact that knowing a little about ACC basketball is a required part of our heritage, graduating from the UNC system (UNC-Greensboro appropriately enough), and having a friend who involuntarily bows his head in supplication anytime we pass exit # 148 on I-85, I pledge to maintain objectivity throughout this commentary.

After a quick scan of each university’s website, it was interesting to learn more about what they have going on in terms of environmental and sustainability efforts.

Aside from MSU’s school colors and “Go Green!” mantra blasted on the home page, Ecofoot (hmmm- guess they can’t pass up a good icon when they see it), is their official website for the Office of Campus Sustainability.  ecofoot1MSU has recently been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as one of the top five campuses in the nation for its programs on keeping the campus green and is continuing a sustainability speakers series as well.  In January, MSU Theatre Department hosted its first eco-friendly production so lots of good, green activity is going on here.

carolina-green On the other hand, or maybe foot I should say, UNC conducts Carolina Green Games which encourages individuals and departments to implement eco-friendly practices, raise awareness and reward those community members who promote environmental stewardship. In addition to their many sustainability initiatives, these stickers one-less-cup will be available soon for students to place on their reusable mugs to show support of reducing waste.  And of course, let’s not forget Danny Green.

It’s apparent that both MSU and UNC are taking serious strides to educate their faculty, staff and students and should be commended on their ongoing efforts. I’m sure there are many more initiatives both schools are undertaking as well.

As far as tonight, let’s hope Detroit has some initiatives in place and that fans around the country will implement eco-friendly game watching strategies regardless of their location.

Here are a few quick tips for watching the game at home:

  • Wear an organic team t-shirt like the ones below – all available at Johnny T-Shirt on Franklin Street or online.
  • Bring beverages and food in a reusable toteunc-tote and don’t forget your own water bottle or cup.unc-mug
  • Opt for cloth napkins and tablecloths and remember to wash in cold water afterwards.
  • Recycle all cans, glass, chipboard and whatever else your local municipality accepts .
  • Instead of every TV turned on in the house, just keep it to the main game-viewing room.

Oh and one more thing…GO HEELS!!!!
